This season of “Jay Leno’s Garage” marks the second time that Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School has had the good fortune to work with Jay Leno and his team.

A couple of years ago Jay jumped behind the wheel of a Super Comp Dragster and made some 8-second passes under the tutelage of World Champ & school founder Frank Hawley and guest instructor Pro Stock Champ Erica Enders.

“As I remember, Jay did a pretty good job considering it was his first time ever in a dragster”, said Hawley.

Earlier this year a Leno producer contacted Hawley again but this time the project would be completely different.

“Leno was doing a piece on forgotten and not very popular cars,” explained Hawley.  “They were looking for a couple AMC cars, a Pacer and a Gremlin.  They wanted to see if anyone still had these cars and better still had anyone modified them for drag racing,” continued Hawley.  “Well they found a couple cool cars and wanted to see them race one another.  To make sure everything was legit, they asked the school to help arrange the race and if we could, provide the drivers.  I said of course.”

The race would be at the school’s west coast location at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA.  After a fair amount of deliberation, it was agreed that school owner Frank Hawley and long time school consultant and current Nitro Funny Car driver Jack Beckman would be the designated drivers.

“Frank called me and told me about the show and what we’d be doing and I said, ‘count me in’,” said World Champ Jack Beckman.  “The first time we saw the cars was on the day of the shoot at Fontana.  They looked pretty cool!  A supercharged Pacer and a Gremlin with carburetors and a tunnel ram.  By coin toss I got the Pacer.” continued Beckman.

With no practice runs, Hawley and Beckman got strapped in for the big race.  The outcome is featured on the Jay Leno Garage show, Episode 502 — link below to the full episode!

“It really was a fun day. School employee and Funny Car driver Jeff Arend was on hand to help co-ordinate everything and I really appreciate Jack taking a day out of his busy schedule to help out.  Jay Leno and his team are always great to work with.  A great time was had by all,” said Hawley.

“The first cars we ran when we opened the school in 1985 were our TAFC’s,” said school founder Frank Hawley.  “We added TAD’s a year later and have been training drivers in these types of cars ever since.  Many of the top drivers in our sport, Robert Hight, Antron Brown, Steve Torrence, Doug Kalitta, Jack Beckman, Brittany Force, Matt Hagan, Austin Prock, Jordan Vandergriff, and many more have trained with us over the years,” continued Hawley.

“Drivers rely on us to give them great training and provide reliable race cars.  It’s really important that we give that to them.  Reliability and performance go hand in hand and that is why we started using MGP rods,” said Hawley.  “I had heard from many sources that MGP rods were a great product.  When I first held one of the rods in my hands, I was very impressed with the fit, finish and feel of the product.  After running them for several classes we’re convinced we made the right choice.”

“Our goal at MGP is to connect customers to victory. Teaming up with great people like the Frank Hawley Drag School helps us do that.  MGP provides industry leading connecting rods to drag racers ranging from sportsman classes to top fuel and we are excited to be a part of drag racing education with this great school,” said Chris Reiter.

Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School offers training in a wide variety of cars with programs to suit every budget, so if you’d like to go drag racing give the school a call!

First, you go to school, and then you get in the business.

Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School graduate Spencer Markell has taken this pathway.  Recently Markell purchased veteran sportsman drag racer Steve Cohen’s operation.

“I’ve been a drag racing fan for years but never had the opportunity to get really involved until now,” Markell said. “I’ve been looking at Super Comp, and Top Dragster and the chance to purchase a quality operation from a champion like Steve Cohen doesn’t come along every day.

“At the Gatornationals, I ran into Steve, and the deal seemed like it was just meant to be. Steve and I agreed that the way to start was to go to Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School with the new car.”

The school’s founder and director, Frank Hawley, was impressed with Markell’s performance in the school.

“Spencer attended our Super Comp class and did quite well,” Hawley said. “Driving our Super Comp car was the perfect preparation for getting behind the wheel of Steve’s Top Dragster.”

Cohen, a veteran of sportsman drag racing for decades, believes Markell made an excellent choice in heading to Hawley for driver training.

“Frank and I have known each other for over 30 years,” Cohen said. “Frank runs a first-class operation, and I enjoyed working with him to get Spencer up to speed in the Top Dragster. My driving days are not over, but I am going to enjoy helping Spencer develop the skills necessary to compete at a national event.”

What a great title for the promotion put on by The Automotive Distribution Network!

Repair shops were invited to participate in a unique two-month promotion where GRAND PRIZE winners were chosen to attend an all-expenses paid trip to the “Drag Racing Adventure at Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School” in Las Vegas, NV.  Shops simply purchased parts from 30+ sponsoring manufacturers where each dollar earned a point, which earned an “entry” in the drawing so the more points they earned, the bigger their chances to win. The winners were randomly drawn at the end of the promotion.

Driver Kevin Smalley took home the win and the trophy for the day!  “Thank you to Frank and his team for an exciting and awesome time in Las Vegas!  I enjoyed it so much that I signed up for a competition license class in August!”

“The group from Parts Plus had a fantastic experience”, said Steve Tucker! “The day we spent with Frank and team was the highlight of our Vegas trip with our customers.  The day was fun, exhilarating and exciting!  We had 16 grand prize winners attend and we had drivers participate in age from 30 to 75!  The fact that the steering wheel and pedals can be adjusted to fit just about any size driver made it easy to accommodate everyone as well.  We look forward to doing it again!”

“We had a great time working with Steve and all the folks from Parts Plus. Everyone performed well in the dragsters and with a little luck Kevin was the top driver.  We’re looking forward to working with them again!” said Frank Hawley.

Busy times at FHDRS!  We have been running lots of classes and helping new racers earn their NHRA competition licenses this year!  Our annual class after the 50th Gatornationals is always a melting pot of drivers, and this year we had people attending from all over the US, Canada, Norway and England.   We followed up with a Funny Car class, hosted another Super Comp/Super Gas Competition License Class and the one-day Dragster Adventure.  Then while we were getting ready to head west, we added another 2-day competition license class and Alcohol Dragster class to help more people earn their licenses to go racing.

When you receive this we’ll be running classes at Tucson Dragway.  Following Tucson, we head to Auto Club Dragway and then on to Las Vegas.  While our classes in Vegas have been sold out for some time, we have a few seats left at the Fontana class on April 24-25.  There are also a couple seats in the Dragster Adventures on April 19 and April 26 at Auto Club Dragway.  Class dates coming up: Gainesville Raceway May 14-15 (license class); Route 66 Raceway May 23-24 (license class); Houston Raceway June 5-6 (license class) and Houston Raceway June 7 (dragster adventure); Woodburn Dragstrip June 26-27 (license class with only SC Dragster seats left) and Woodburn Dragstrip June 28 or June 29 (dragster adventures); Summit Motorsports Park July 15-16 (license class); Heartland Motorsports Park July 30-31 (license class); and Maple Grove Raceway August 12-13 (license class).  More fall dates on our calendar, too!

Many of our dragster adventure days are already sold out, so we thank you for your support of this program and please know we’ll try to increase the dates for these next year!

All the competition license classes include the lectures on how to “Improve your Personal Performance”.  The classroom sessions cover the physiology of how your mind and body work together.  You’ll learn how to mentally prepare, perform at the highest level, improve focus and block out distractions.  Frank teaches how to practice more effectively whether at the track, at the shop or at home.  He’ll share techniques on how to remove the emotional baggage (everybody has some) that can often disrupt good performance.  People share with us they find this classroom time extremely useful in their work, at home and of course on the track!

Remember, our Alcohol class dates are scheduled on demand, so give us a call if you’re ready to take that next step in your career.
