STIHL Southeast Hits High Gear with Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School at Gainesville Raceway
On a recent day in May,
Florida’s Gainesville Raceway didn’t just roar with the thunder of dragsters—it echoed with the camaraderie and competition of STIHL employees living out the ultimate bucket list experience. Spearheaded by David Sease, Director of Sales at STIHL Southeast, the event wasn’t an average team-building exercise. Instead of trust falls and repetitive PowerPoint slides, the team members strapped into dragsters and barreled down a quarter-mile track, courtesy of Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School.
For Sease, the decision to host a team-building day at a drag strip was intentionally unconventional. “So much of team building now is very… beige,” he shared. Inspired by his father-in-law’s love of NHRA drag racing, Sease thought it would be fun if he and his group could get in on the action themselves and a quick Google search led him to Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School. “Within a day, I had Frank [Hawley] on the phone and a plan in place.”
The objective wasn’t just about fun: it was about rewarding 26 of STIHL Southeast’s hardworking men and women. Competitive by nature, STIHL’s field teams are actively engaged with supporting dealers with sales and service—and thrilling team building events, like participating in the School’s Dragster Adventure Challenge, help keep that spirit live.
Kicking off the day, participants enjoyed a classroom session with Hawley himself, a legend in the racing community revered for his insights and lessons. Next, the group transitioned to the track for a dry run on procedures and a walkthrough of what to expect. Finally, it was time to gear up and get going with the Dragster Adventure Challenge.
After getting comfortable in the full-sized, competition-style dragsters and graduating from initial eighth-mile runs to full quarter-mile passes, STIHL’s team members each made their qualifying hits to see if they would make the cut for the grand finale: a thrilling 16-car eliminator competition.
One of the participants, Wesley Kuehling, STIHL Southeast’s District Manager for Florida, never expected to walk away from the weekend as a winner, but that’s exactly what happened—and, just days shy of his 41st birthday.
“This was probably the most fun thing I’ve ever done,” Kuehling proclaimed. And that’s saying something, considering STIHL Southeast’s previous team-building exercise had the group driving tanks. With no formal racing experience other than an affinity for fast cars, Kuehling was admittedly a little apprehensive at first. “I was thinking, ‘I’m going to sit in a rocket and shoot down the dragstrip.’ And I was the very first one to go. I didn’t get to see anyone do it first!”
It didn’t take him long to get the hang of things, though, and he quickly clocked a quarter-mile trap speed of more than 120 mph. “It was almost like going through warp speed in Star Wars,” he laughed. “But not a single one of us slipped up, which proves what a great job Frank [Hawley] and his team did teaching us the process.”
Ultimately, it was Kuehling’s quick reaction times and consistency that helped him defeat each teammate-turned-opponent until he found himself taking an unexpected yet extremely gratifying trip to the winner’s circle as the official victor of the School’s Dragster Adventure Challenge. His first real win in a competition of any kind, Kuehling ended the day feeling exhilarated and inspired. “A couple of guys and I spent a few hours that night looking at dragsters for sale, and hopefully I’ll get to take my restomod ’51 Chevy down the track one day,” he added.
The Dragster Adventure Challenge wasn’t just about raw speed—it was about showing how preparation, clear communication, and coaching could create an environment where everyone felt empowered to succeed.
“It’s easy to underestimate how difficult it is to coordinate a large group and keep things safe, smooth, and efficient,” said Sease, who participated in the program and had a blast experiencing the rush of eclipsing triple-digit speeds behind the wheel of a dragster. “But Frank and Lana were the definition of professional and did a fantastic job running the day. This was probably the best team-building event we’ve ever done!” Additionally, Sease enjoyed seeing his team encourage each other while also wanting to win; the balance of good sportsmanship and spirited competitiveness was exactly what he had hoped to achieve.
“Working with corporate clients always produces exciting days at the School. Having spent my life outdoors, I’m very familiar with STIHL’s industry-leading brand of chain saws, weed eaters, and other products” said founder Frank Hawley. “Although STIHL Southeast President Mark Bixler didn’t race, he watched his team race side-by-side in our dragsters. STIHL is a great fit for drag racers who are traditionally DIY-type folks that spend a great deal of time outdoors.”
In the end, the STIHL Southeast team left Gainesville Raceway with more than just a trophy and bragging rights. They departed with a renewed sense of camaraderie, a shared memory of pushing their personal limits, and a powerful lesson in focus and execution—made possible thanks to Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School and its Dragster Adventure Challenge. For a company built on performance, STIHL’s day at the drags was a perfect, and profoundly loud, affirmation of their core values.

Mickey Thompson’s Annual Dragster Adventure Challenge Heats Ups at Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School
Written by Ainsley Jacobs
Each year, Mickey Thompson Performance Tires and Wheels honors its hardworking employees and dedicated dealers and distributors by sending a group to Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School
to participate in the thrilling Dragster Adventure Challenge. For 2024, the event was held on July 9 at the iconic Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio, and it was Wheel Pros’ Dan Pack who came out on top.
Mickey Thompson has been partnered with the School since 1999 as the official tire supplier for all the vehicles involved in Frank Hawley’s program, and the fun Dragster Adventure Challenge allows anyone to enjoy the exhilaration of piloting a dragster without the requirements of becoming a licensed racer. Available to both the general public as well as corporations looking for unique teambuilding outings, the Dragster Adventure Challenge is available at various tracks all around the country throughout the year.
“We have been working with Mickey Thompson’s team for 25 years, and have enjoyed growing the relationship during that time,” said Frank Hawley, founder of the School. “Letting M/T’s employees and customers participate in our Dragster Adventure Challenge Program and give many folks their first chance to strap into a dragster and power down the quarter-mile is a real honor.”
With a full field of 16 participants, eight of which were Mickey Thompson customers, the group had an absolute blast rocketing down “America’s Racetrack” and participating in a simulated competition.
“We had a fantastic customer turnout and had some new employees participate, a few of whom have raced on their own but this gave them formal education on racing,” shared Jason Moulton, Director of Motorsports at Mickey Thompson Performance Tires and Wheels. A few Goodyear employees, Mickey Thompson’s parent company, were new to drag racing altogether and they were lucky enough to participate in the program and get that “on track” feel as they continue their careers. “We’re taking people that either work with our product or sell it and are letting them experience it in a real race car at one of the best facilities and with one of the best schools out there. Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School is first-class – everyone always has a great time!”
After receiving instruction and training on how to drive the full-size, competition-style dragsters capable of going 0-60 MPH in 3 seconds and surpassing speeds of 130 MPH in the quarter-mile, Mickey Thompson’s esteemed team was paired by chip draw for a 16-car eliminations ladder. Participants got to experience the excitement of staging side-by-side, perfecting their reaction times, and flying to the finish line. The competition was friendly yet fierce, and the final round saw M/T customer Dan Pack, a sales representative for Wheel Pros (a division of Hoonigan), awarded the trophy over the race’s second-place finisher and Goodyear engineer, Joe Ciarniello.
“Going to Frank Hawley’s School was an amazing experience,” said Pack. “Not only to drive the cars and feel the adrenaline with the Gs and speed, but to meet a legend in the motorsports industry. Big thanks to Mickey Thompson!”
In addition to giving back to the folks who make Mickey Thompson’s business operations run smoothly, the Dragster Adventure Challenge and all of Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School’s other classes provide Mickey Thompson with valuable product testing data.
“The School runs our tires in real-world settings and at multiple tracks, and that provides us great feedback on how our products perform in different conditions which helps us generate new ideas going forward and gives us opportunities for continuous improvement,” added Moulton. Additionally, students of the School experience Mickey Thompson’s performance tires firsthand, which gives them the confidence to trust the products with their own racing or performance programs.
Together, Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School and Mickey Thompson provide true “bucket list” moments not just for the lucky few selected to attend M/T’s annual event, but for anyone who’s ever dreamed of driving a dragster or drag car.

Mickey Thompson Celebrates Staff and Customers with Dragster Adventure at Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School
Written by Ainsley Jacobs
For more than twenty years, Mickey Thompson Performance Tires and Wheels has been the official tire supplier of Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School. In addition to knowing the importance of providing the best racing rubber to its customers, M/T knows the importance of appreciating its hardworking employees. Every year, the company honors a select group by sending them to the School to participate in the popular Dragster Adventure Challenge.
Frank Hawley’s Dragster Adventure Challenge was specifically designed as a fun course to give enthusiasts the chance to drive a dragster – and also compete in a side-by-side race – without the stringent requirements of becoming a licensed racer. Available to the general public and to corporations at various dragstrips across the country, it’s an incredible opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds.
The full-sized, competition-style cars are capable of running 0-60 mph in 3-seconds at speeds upwards of 130 mph in the quarter-mile. Like all of the cars at Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School, each one depends on Mickey Thompson’s American-made rubber to get them down the track safely, consistently, and quickly.
On July 12, 2022, Mickey Thompson brought sixteen of its lucky staff and customers to Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio, for a special day of excitement. Additionally, since Goodyear acquired Mickey Thompson when it purchased its parent company, Cooper Tire & Rubber, in 2021, several Goodyear engineers were invited to attend so that they could experience the M/T performance drag racing side of things.
“We’ve had a lot of discussions on how we can improve our products, both for our racers and Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School. Getting the Goodyear team out to race gave them a different perspective on things,” noted Jason Moulton, Director of Motorsports at Mickey Thompson. Moulton believes that perspective is the key to helping people understand the importance of their role in every process, whether it’s manufacturing or drag racing. “For our customers, we enjoy showing them why we work so hard to deliver the best performance with our race tires.”
Owner and founder of the School, Frank Hawley, has also enjoyed the longstanding relationship with Mickey Thompson. “In addition to the fantastic products that they manufacture, Mickey Thompson has assembled a great group of people,” shared Hawley. “Jason [Moulton] and his team consistently produce for us and our students, and we’re looking forward to many more years with M/T’s tires performing so well for our customers.”
Moulton wasn’t scheduled to participate in this outing, however, when another driver had to cancel at the last minute, he eagerly stepped in. “It was a great experience and helped me better understand what it’s like to drive from the customer’s perspective,” noted the man who also got an updated, firsthand look at M/T’s tire performance and consistency. “Plus, who doesn’t want to get in a car and go ripping down the track? It’s always a thrill, and the School’s instruction and equipment are top-notch!”
For Moulton, his favorite moments from the day weren’t centered around his time behind the wheel – instead, he loves seeing the sheer joy on a new racer’s face after making their first run. “Participating in a program like this is something that everyone absolutely needs to try,” he affirmed.
Of the group, which included seasoned racers like Moulton as well as rookies, it was Saiyd Drake, a 22-year-old M/T warehouse associate and first-time racer, who went on to win the Dragster Adventure Challenge race outright.
“It caught me a little off-guard since I wasn’t used to going that fast,” laughed Drake, who appreciated using the same tires he handles daily. “Frank and his team told me to focus on my reaction time, not to be nervous, and to go for it when I saw the lights [on the tree] change.”
Drake showed true natural talent and the School’s program helped him turn on several win lights in a row as he progressed through the friendly competition. Although the unexpected final round win itself “felt great and was amazing,” Drake especially enjoyed talking with the other racers and the School’s staff. “I loved it and would like to race more,” he added happily.
Whether it’s beginners like Drake or frequent competitors, Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School offers tons of amazing opportunities to strap into the driver’s seat and blast down the track. From the NHRA and IHRA licensing courses to the no-experience-required Dragster Adventure Challenge, everyone who attends will get the bonus of rolling on a set of Mikey Thompson’s iconic tires.

In drag racing, there’s perhaps no greater glory than capturing a win at the legendary Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. The famed facility has hosted countless success stories over the years,
and those who want to experience the same thrill on the hallowed grounds will have the opportunity to do so in early June of 2022 thanks to Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School.
With no experience needed to participate, both rookie racers and veteran drivers alike can obtain their NHRA competition license during the School’s 2-day course to be held on June 20-21, followed by the School’s popular Dragster Adventure on June 22.
Participants in the immersive 2-day licensing course will enjoy both classroom and on-track segments. Once the groundwork is covered, students will make longer and longer passes down the historic Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park 1,320-foot surface under the careful guidance of Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School staff with important, personalized post-run feedback and coaching.
“One of my most exciting victories came at Indy in 1982 when we defeated Don Prudhomme at the first-ever Big Bud Shootout which was, at the time, the richest drag race in history,” reminisced Frank Hawley who attended his first national event, the US Nationals in Indianapolis, at the track in 1969. “It’s great to return to Indy to teach students to race on one of my favorite tracks.”
On June 22, the focus shifts to flat-out fun as the Dragster Adventure allows participants the chance to race in a side-by-side matchup while clocking speeds nearing 130 mph in the quarter-mile. A great gift for family, friends, employees, customers, or anyone wanting to relish the rush of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds, no prior racing experience is needed to join the School’s Dragster Adventure and seats in the program can be reserved online.

President Track Management & Operations at Indy. “We love seeing accomplished racers sharpen their skills or novices take things to the next level. Frank is a fantastic teacher and does everything with safety in mind.”

No past driving experience is needed, and participants will be able to feel what it’s like to speed through the traps at roughly 130 mph.
“I raced for over thirty years, but I was astonished at how much I learned from taking Frank’s classes – even after having already driven Pro Mods,” noted Chris Payne, Owner of Heartland Motorsports Park. “I was a self-taught racer and Frank could have helped me exponentially if I had taken his courses earlier. Having Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School at our facility is hugely beneficial to our racers and we’re happy to be able to give people in the area access to it.”

program on April 6, and no previous racing experience is needed to participate in any of the programs.

Frank Hawley’s valuable insights and personalized coaching highlight the experience while encouraging personal improvement.

It’s been 5 years since Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School has been at Bandimere Speedway!
“We absolutely love the Bandimere facility and the staff and are looking forward to returning to the Mile High Raceway July 27, 28 and 29th,” said school owner Frank Hawley. ” Our drivers get to drive on one of the best prepared race tracks in the country while also enjoying one of the most scenic areas of any place we visit. On one side of the track are the mountains and on the other a skyline view of the city of Denver. It’s a great place for the drivers, their families and friends to visit.” said Hawley .
“I am a graduate of the Hawley School and can tell you it’s a first class operation with excellent instructors and equipment,” said ‘Sporty’ Bandimere. “I think everyone could benefit from Hawley’s instruction. We’re excited to have the Frank Hawley School back.”
The School will offer two programs. On July 27th we will offer the Dragster Adventure program. “In this class we let drivers train in 10 second dragsters. They’re equipped with a gas pedal, a brake pedal and an automatic transmission similar to a regular car,” said Hawley. “And the drivers can also choose to compete in ‘side-by-side’ competition. It’s the only place in the country where almost anyone can learn to drive a dragster in the morning and race for a trophy in the afternoon. It’s the perfect program for someone that wants to give driving a try without committing the resources needed for our competition course,” added Hawley.
The other program is one of most popular, the 2-day NHRA competition licensing program in which many of today’s current Pro drivers started their careers. It is also the course that many JR Dragster drivers have chosen to begin their transition into bigger cars. The class is a comprehensive course that combines racetrack and classroom time (Frank’s Personal Performance seminar) to get drivers started in the right direction. Students can drive our SC or SG cars or bring their own car to class. Additionally it gives drivers that may already be racing an opportunity to get certified to 7:50 ET.
